AlertNet (www.alertnet.org) – This is a wonderful website for both getting up-to-date news on various hot spots around the world and also for looking for jobs in international relief work. The following is copied from their homepage: “AlertNet provides global news, communications and logistics services to the international disaster relief community and the public. Anyone can access the public pages, which have a live news feed from Reuters together with articles describing how relief agencies are responding to the latest humanitarian crises. AlertNet is funded and run by Reuters Foundation -- an educational and humanitarian trust created by Reuters, the global news and information group."
Inter Action (www.interaction.org) – “A coalition of over 170 non-profit organizations (NGOs) working worldwide – and the U.S.’s leading advocate for sustainable development, refugee and disaster assistance and humanitarian aid.” From this web site there are links to these NGOs and their individual job listings, as well as news about emerging humanitarian issues. They put out a bi-weekly newsletter called Monday Developments which also has job listings in addition to articles on current events in the humanitarian field. They also put out a publication called Global Work that lists volunteer, internship and fellowship opportunities.
RedR (http://www.redr.org) – This is the website of Registered Engineers in Development and Relief, based in England. They keep a register of professionals willing to do emergency work on short notice, and have a lot of good articles, technical resources, and links to other sites. Please see their web page “Useful Publications” for a good list of necessary references for relief work.
ReliefWeb (www.aidworkers.net/personal/jobsites/htm) A thorough listing of websites advertising jobs for qualified and experienced aid workers, including postings for volunteers and interns.
Public Health Employment Connection

professionals. A wide
range of agencies, both domestic and international, advertise here.
STOP Polio (http://www.cdc.gov/vaccines/programs/stop/default.htm) This is CDC’s program to recruit for WHO’s effort to eradicate polio worldwide. Dozens of teams go out to countries in rotating 3-month volunteer (w/reimbursed expenses) assignments.

Other Volunteer Resources - Many humanitarian NGOs have domestic volunteer networks to raise awareness of humanitarian issues, help with fundraising, and help with recruitment. American Refugee Committee has its Global Partners network - check with other NGO websites for their domestic volunteer networks through the links at the Inter Action website. The Peace Corps has a program for their returned volunteers to do emergency relief work called Crisis Corps. Assignments are 3-6 months and the volunteer is seconded to an NGO. Becoming a Disaster Services Volunteer with our local chapter of the American Red Cross may allow you to be nominated to serve with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) on overseas assignments.
